Arbeter Froyen (Worker Women) is based on a poem "Tsu Arbeter Froyen" written by Dovid Edelshtat (1866-1892), published 1891 - which acted as an appeal to proletariat women to join the struggle. Detroit-born, Berlin-based singer/songwriter, polyglot poet, translator and activist Daniel Kahn, along with his band The Painted Bird presents a variety of passionate songs inspired in part by the struggles of Jewish revolutionaries at the turn of the century, and in part by his own intense desire for a better world. Daniel Kahn has featured many times in Bund celebrations - the Bund sponsored his tour down-unter and together with Psoy Korolenko - performed virtually (before it was a 'thing'!) at the Bund Yoyvl in 2017. This year our Yoyvl was, for the first time, conducted entirely online. "In Zaltsikn Yam” (In the Salty Sea), is an early-twentieth-century Yiddish workers' song. The poem was written in 1901 by S. An-sky (Shloyme Zanvl Rappoport [1863-1920]) the Jewish writer, ethnographer, poet, and radical. The song's alternative title is “Tsum Bund” (To the Bund) as it was written for the Bund. The poem was first published in the Yiddish socialist journal Der Arbayter in 1902. It was later published in Poland in 1922 in the eighth volume of An-sky’s collected works, as well as in Chana and Joseph Mlotek's 1974 publication Perl fun der yidisher poezie (Pearls of Yiddish Poetry). When Eastern European Jews immigrated en masse to the United States in the 1880s and ’90s fleeing Czarist oppression and poverty, they brought with them a body of secular folk songs. "Vos Shloft Ir, Ir Shlefer?" (Why Do You Slumber, You Slumberers?) was originally performed by Feygl Sultan and was collected by Ruth Rubin in 1948 in New York. She has collaborated with Daniel Kahn to develop an “interlingual” love song duo program STRANGELOVESONGS. She is also a member of an all-star band Semer Ensemble led by Alan Bern. Sasha also performs and leads Yiddish dance with the Berlin klezmer band You Shouldn’t Know From It. One of her most recent projects is Goyfriend: a collaboration with Brooklyn-based Band Litvakus discovering the musical interactions between Jews and their non-Jewish neighbours. This was Sasha's (virtual) Australian debut - sharing her favourite worker's and Bundist songs for the 123rd Yoyvl of the Jewish Labour Bund. Before it was made popular on Netflix's hit series 'Money Heist', Bella Ciao was an Italian protest song, originating in the late 19th century among the mondina women, paddy field workers, protesting against harsh working conditions. The song was then modified and adopted as an anthem of the anti-fascist resistance by the Italian partisans between 1943 and 1945 during the Italian Resistance, the resistance of Italian partisans against the Nazi German forces occupying Italy, and, during the Italian Civil War, the Italian partisan struggle against the fascist Italian Social Republic and its Nazi German allies. Versions of "Bella ciao" are sung worldwide as an anti-fascist hymn of freedom and resistance. This Yiddish version is a newer one of those.
